Description
    Ochna kirkii from the family Ochnaceae is one of the 86 species of Ochna shrub and trees. Ochna kirkii oliv subs, also called Mickey mouse plant, wich has smaller and serrated leaves and smaller flowers. The genus name Ochna comes from the Greek work Ochne, meaning "wild pear" because of its similarity to leaves of the pear tree. Ochna kirkii is a big shrub or small tree growing to a height of 3 to 4,5 meters tall. leaves are gossy and dark green, oblong elliptic to narrow-obovate, cuneate or heart-shaped blunt or rounded at the tip, up to 10 cm long, margins are entire or undulate, usually with fine hairs. Flowers are in small panicles or short, lateral branchlets. Petals are 2,5 cm long, calyx, resembling Mickey mouse ears when paired . In optimum growing conditions it can be a year-round flowering and fruiting shrub, it produces bright yellow 5-petaled single flowers in axillary and terminal clusters. Each flower is 3,8 -5,1 cm in diameter, cupped by pale-green or lemon coloured sepals (calyx) and has a cluster of yellow staments with orange of the shrub. As the flower petals wither or are shed, the calyx closed up like a flower bud oncen again and gradually changes in colour to peach and deepen to tea rose. Within it, the friut hat comprised of 1-6 green berry-like drupelets develop on a swollen receptacle. As the berries get bigger. the calyx turns blood red and reopend to expose the immunature green drupelets, sitting erect around the long and red style, on the waxyy and fleshy red disk and surrounded by the persistent stament and petal-like sepals.
